How to Get News Articles and Press Releases Indexed Fast
News loses value by the hour. Here's how to make new articles and press releases discoverable within minutes — news sitemaps, markup, syndication and the mistakes that slow everything down.
Why news has the shortest indexing window
A product guide can wait a week to be indexed; a news story or announcement often can't. Search engines refresh news results quickly, but only for pages they can actually find and trust. The goal is to remove every delay between publishing and discovery.
There's no Google News application anymore
Google stopped accepting manual publication submissions in Publisher Center. Sites are now considered for Top Stories and the News tab automatically, provided the content is original, clearly dated and attributed, and follows Google News policies. Getting in is about technical and editorial signals, not a form.
Publish a Google News sitemap
- Include only articles published in the last two days, then remove them (or their news tags) once they're older.
- Keep each news sitemap to 1,000 news entries or fewer; split it if you publish more.
- Fill in the required tags: publication name, language, publication date and article title — and keep the publication name identical everywhere.
Mark up every article properly
Use NewsArticle or Article structured data with the headline, datePublished, dateModified and author. Show the same byline and dates visibly on the page, give every story one permanent canonical URL, and don't change the URL after publishing.
Press releases: avoid the duplicate-content trap
A distributed release can appear word-for-word on dozens of sites within hours, and search engines usually index just one version. Publish the release in your own newsroom first so yours is the original, ask distribution partners to point a canonical tag back to it or at least link to it, and label promotional or sponsored material clearly — Google News policies don't allow advertising dressed up as editorial content.
Notify search engines the moment you publish
Submit your news sitemap in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools so both check it regularly. Ping IndexNow on publish to reach Bing — which also feeds Bing News and Microsoft Copilot — plus Yandex, Naver, Seznam and Yep instantly. And link each new story from your homepage or newsroom, since crawlers revisit those pages most often.
What quietly slows news indexing
Slow server responses during traffic spikes, article lists that only load through infinite scroll or JavaScript, paywalled articles without the right structured data, and headlines or URLs that keep changing after publication. Each of these makes crawlers slower to pick up, or slower to trust, your newest stories.
