Why most programmatic pages never get indexed

Search engines don't index everything they find. When hundreds or thousands of pages share one template and differ only by a swapped-in keyword, most of them end up as "Discovered – currently not indexed" or "Crawled – currently not indexed". Scale magnifies whatever quality signal each page sends — good or bad.

Stay on the right side of Google's spam policies

Google's policy on scaled content abuse targets many pages generated primarily to manipulate rankings rather than help users — whether they're written by people, by AI or by scripts. Programmatic SEO is fine when each page answers a real query with genuinely different, useful information. It becomes a problem when the only thing that changes is the city or keyword in the headline.

Make every page worth indexing

• Give each page unique data that matters to the searcher — prices, specifications, availability, local details, reviews — not just a new heading.
• Don't publish pages with empty or near-empty results; hold them back until there's real content, or noindex them.
• Consolidate near-duplicates into one stronger page and point canonical tags at it, rather than letting similar pages compete.

Build internal links crawlers can follow

A page nobody links to is hard to discover and looks unimportant. Organise programmatic pages into crawlable hubs — category and index pages with plain HTML links — and link related pages to each other. Avoid lists that only appear after JavaScript runs or behind infinite scroll.

Use sitemaps to show scale, not to force it

Split large page sets into several sitemaps under a sitemap index, grouped by section, so coverage reports show which templates are indexing well. Each sitemap file is limited to 50,000 URLs or 50 MB uncompressed. Only list canonical, indexable URLs, and keep lastmod accurate so updates stand out.

Launch in batches and watch the data

Publishing 50,000 pages at once gives you no signal and can swamp your crawl budget. Release a representative batch first, check Search Console's page indexing report after a few weeks, and fix the template before scaling. If a batch mostly lands in "Crawled – currently not indexed", the issue is page value, not discovery.

Speed up discovery once pages are good

Once the template earns indexing, speed matters: submit updated sitemaps, and push new or changed URLs to search engines that support IndexNow (Bing, Yandex, Naver, Seznam and Yep) so each batch is found in minutes rather than weeks. Faster discovery helps good pages; it won't rescue weak ones.
