What Is IndexNow? A Complete Guide

The problem IndexNow solves
Search engines have traditionally discovered new or updated pages by periodically re-crawling your site and following links — a passive process that can take anywhere from hours to weeks depending on how often the crawler visits. IndexNow flips that: instead of waiting to be noticed, your site tells the search engine directly, the moment content changes.
How it actually works
IndexNow is a simple HTTP protocol. A site generates a unique key, hosts a text file containing that key at its own domain root (e.g. yourdomain.com/<key>.txt — proving ownership), then sends a request to a shared IndexNow endpoint with the URL(s) that changed. Because Bing, Yandex, Seznam, and Naver all consume the same shared endpoint, one submission can reach all of them at once, instead of pinging each search engine separately.
Which search engines actually use it
Bing, Yandex, Seznam.cz, and Naver all support IndexNow today. Google does not — it has never adopted the protocol and has no public bulk-submission equivalent. For Google specifically, a submitted sitemap plus Search Console's URL Inspection tool remain the only legitimate ways to request faster crawling. Any tool claiming to "instantly index on Google" via IndexNow is describing something that isn't technically possible.
What a submission does — and doesn't — guarantee
A successful IndexNow submission means the search engine has accepted your URL for consideration and will prioritize crawling it sooner. It does not force indexing — the search engine still applies its own quality and relevance judgment before a page appears in results. Ownership is also checked independently by each search engine (by fetching your key file), so a submission for a domain you don't control won't bypass their verification.
When it's worth using
IndexNow matters most right after publishing new content, after a significant update to an existing page, or after removing a page you want dropped from results faster. It's a complement to a good sitemap and internal linking structure, not a replacement for either.
